Inocêncio, o santo do sertão

Overview

In the driest reaches of Piauí’s backlands, drought, hunger, and illiteracy were more than climatic or social conditions; they were destinies passed down from one generation to the next. Until the footsteps of one man changed the course of this forgotten land. Dom Inocêncio López Santamaria, a Spanish bishop driven by unwavering conviction, crossed the ocean with one certainty: oppression can only be overcome through education. Where public authorities were absent, he built schools, restored dignity, and opened paths toward a future. He did not merely preach the faith; he transformed reality. Decades after his death, as Rome carefully examines his beatification process, the backlands have already delivered their verdict. For the devotees who still carry his memory in their skin and souls, Dom Inocêncio is already a saint. The Vatican sets the rules. The people proclaim his sainthood.
