Overview
To many of his friends, fans, and companions, he was “Schurli”; to a wider audience, he was Georg Danzer: a singer-songwriter, poet, and subtle intellectual. He became famous for his Viennese wit and songs like “Jö Schau” and “Hupf in Gatsch.” But behind that twinkle in his eye lies far more than just humor and pop songs: political and poetic, often melancholic lyrics, sharp observations, and a deep connection to people on the margins of society. To mark his 80th birthday, this ORF documentary traces Georg Danzer’s life through his songs and writings—featuring rare archival footage, memories from friends and family, and previously unpublished notes. A personal look at “Schurli Danzer,” at Vienna, and at Viennese culture.
