When a jellyfish monster from the sea tried to harm the newborn Mo Niang, the spirit manifested and chased it away. During the struggle, the jellyfish monster knocks down a candlestick and sets fire to the curtains. Although the family put it out immediately, it still frightened Mo Niang and she began to hold a deep fear towards fire from then on.

Jacob, an 11-year-old boy who is looking for kokdu dolls to remember his last moments with his grandmother, accidentally enters the world of these dolls. The "kokdu", literally "funeral doll", a key element in the work, is a wooden doll that adorned the bier (a carriage that carried a coffin) in the funeral culture of the Joseon Dynasty. It was considered a being that accompanied and protected the deceased, so that they would not feel lonely on their way to the afterlife. These dolls, which appeared in various forms, such as warriors, servants, clowns, and guides, embody the philosophy of Joseon-era Koreans, who viewed death not as something to be feared, but as a warm farewell and a new journey. The work is based on the myths and legends of the ancient times in China. "Kuafu chasing the sun" tells the story of the giant Kuafu chasing the sun and eventually turning into a vast forest of peach trees called Deng Forest. "The praise of Kuafu's grand ambition is to race with the Sun", "Laying as a forest of peach trees, and the merits are behind him" –as depicted in Chinese poems, Kuafu is not just an idealist who races with the sun, but also with the spirits of dedication and sacrifice. Kuafu is an ancient hero struggled his whole life for the survival of mankind from big challenges posed by mother nature. The film shows "warmth", "defend" and "resistance" in its keynotes.
