//_sleeper is a short animation set in a dying, industrial town both familiar and unfamiliar. This is neither future nor past, but rather somewhere lost. Somewhere other. The film uses a mix of 2D and CG animation to explore what happens to a lonely figure when a mysterious anomaly appears on the fringes of the landscape. It aims to capture the strange sense of ennui, loss and anxiety that feels appropriate for our times.

How can one film nothing, how to depict infinity in a film? A camera pointed towards the sky registers one such attempt. The infinite sky in the frame is seen precisely that way – like nothing, a film stripe worn out, empty surface, 0 (zero). The hand holding the camera is trying to keep the slide in the same motionless position. At one point, the camera slightly moves to the left out of fatigue. A roof with a chimney appears in the bottom left hand corner – the only part of the scene which inadvertently reveals the attempt and the wish – how to film nothing.

An endless dream unfolding as an iterative sight-test loop, where the gaze is either compelled toward or becomes obsessed with a digitally altered motif: an autorefractor target image. The work explores vision itself, the machinery of seeing, and the mechanisms that structure seeing.

On their way home by bike through a deserted industrial area, a mother and her son starts to talk about what happened when our dream of eternal economic growth collided with the peak, and following decline in global oil production. In a sad but quite plausible picture of the near future, our children make us accountable for today's irresponsible way of living.
